It gives the roll a smooth, low friction bearing surface to turn against during cleaning. Constant spinning eventually wears a bearing block, and a failing left hand block announces itself with grinding, a wobble, or a brush roll that binds. That added drag pulls on the motor and scuffs the roll unevenly.
