In addition to an impressive solo career he was part of the band Planxty for a time from 1972. Much of his music has political overtones: the environment, social ills and poverty; in addition, his lifelong battle with alcohol is also a regular subject of his songs. On his albums, he   regularly collaborates with other Irish artists such as Mary Black, The Dubliners, Sinead O'Connor.
