The cup is the bagless collection bin that captures dust and debris and seals against the vacuum body during use. A cracked, warped, or poorly sealing dirt cup lets fine dust leak back into the air and can bleed off suction at the collection point. Replacing it with the matching factory cup restores clean, contained pickup and a proper seal
