掇只壶，因其造型像宜兴当地以前使用的一种装调料、糖果的容器“掇子”，所以又被称为“掇子”，因为“子”是入声，现在汉语普通话中没有“入”声发音，逐渐传为“掇只”，实为勘误。掇只壶为宜兴制壶大师邵大亨所创制。

1949年以后，紫砂进入了一个微妙的发展时期，从1956年紫砂合作社成立，到1966年文革开始，紫砂分粗货和细货两类，粗货就是日用的普通茶壶，细货就是工艺品。当时，民国绿泥只用于细货，而且一定是提供给手艺特别高的人做，生怕这精贵的原料给糟蹋了。
