Prickly pear cactus were in full bloom, their flowers burning with yellow and orange against the muted tones of stone and scrub. The scene was simple and honest. It was photographed shortly before sunset, when the light begins to soften yet is still a bit harsh and the mesa behind the cactus starts to cast long, directional shadows.
